A New Definition of Success

How do you define success? Would you consider yourself successful? Most people define success as achieving some preconceived, future condition in their lives. If I can raise my children to be happy and confident adults, then I will be successful. Or when I make $100,000 a year, I will be a success. The problem with defining success based on an impending outcome is that by the time you reach "success", you have formed a new perception of what success means to you. And you have missed the thousands of "successful" moments in your life while trying to achieve that condition you call "success".

Success is not a destination - it is a journey. What if success meant being happy and content with your current state of being? This definition requires us to look at our personal desires and values - those things that are important to us. Brian Tracy, author of Maximum Achievement, identifies six requirements for success. These requirements are peace of mind, good health and a high level of energy, loving relationships, financial freedom, commitment to worthy goals and ideals, and a feeling of personal fulfillment or self-actualization. If you take a close look at each of these items, they are all about who you are, not what you do.

It is healthier to develop a three dimensional view of success:

1. Be the best you can be
2. Create an action plan for what you want in the future
3. Enjoy all that life has to offer right now

Let's compare the old definition of success with the new one. Using the old definition of success, my coaching practice will be considered successful when I have a full practice, I am making six figures, and I am in high demand for speaking. I will purchase all the right tools to market my business, and model myself after all the experts. Sounds pretty empty, doesn't it?

The new definition of success would say that I am successful if I like who I am as a coach. If I have satisfying and rewarding coaching relationships with clients that I love, then I am successful. If I have a vision of what my coaching practice looks like in the future, and have a plan in place to get there, then I am successful. Because I love what I do, I am successful. This means I am successful now, and will continue to be successful as long as I am content. And if for some reason my state of contentment should change, I need to ask myself what I need to change about me to bring about happiness and success.

Now, ask yourself if you are successful? Do you have peace of mind and good health? Are you enjoying loving relationships in your life? Do you have enough money to minimize your worries? Does your life have meaning and purpose, and are you committed to becoming everything you are capable of becoming? If you answered yes to these questions, then you are successful. If you answered no to any of these questions, then what do you need to change about you to achieve personal contentment? Look at your thoughts, feelings, desires, actions, dreams, habits and personality characteristics. You have everything you need inside of you to be a raving success!

What Surrounds You? Part 2

Photo from Photo Express - Civetta

Continued from yesterday – do you live or work in a big city? Do you live or work near the beauty nature has to share?  Many people do live in the midst of beauty.  So, if you live by majestic ocean waters, if you drive by phenomenal mountain views every day, if you can take a long walk in a beautiful woodland, do you pay attention?  Do you see the beauty right before you?  It is just as easy to overlook it when it is right in front of you as when you live in a city and it is more challenging to uncover.
Take the time to breathe the fresh air.  Take time to notice the flowers, the trees, the animals, and those around you.  Stop and appreciate the joy that surrounds you.  Be loving, mindful and compassionate towards all of it.  You are just as beautiful, but what surrounds you is just as important as you and your fellow humankind.  Be open to your inner joy and love and share it with the world.

What Surrounds You? Part 1

Photo from PhotoExpress - Gary

Do you live or work in a big city?  Do you live or work near the beauty nature has to share?  Either way it is so important to realize that many do.  Many people, animals, trees, plants, etc. live crammed into concreted walls and streets.  Living so closely with so many people gives one ample opportunity to share love, friendship, and compassion for others.  Yet, far too many rush through the day, pushing and shoving other people, turning from the beggar on the street, yelling at the cashier at the coffee shop, fighting to get the next cab.  I want you to stop in the middle of the busy sidewalk.  Look around.  Be aware of what is going on around you.  Open a door for someone.  Give the beggar a few dollars (it doesn’t matter what he/she chooses to do with it – what matters is that you shared).  Smile at the cashier.  Leave earlier so you won’t feel so rushed to get the next cab.
You may be surrounded by tall buildings and concrete sidewalks, but if you take the time to stop and look, you can find beauty in all of it.  Yes, it is true that sometimes you will have to look harder to find such beauty, but it is there because it is inside of you and everyone and everything around you if only everyone would open to it and share it.

Power Within You

A dark cloud rolls across the sky. Fat rain drops begin to fall. You feel the subtle rumbles. Suddenly there is a flash of light and a crash of thunder. The power pouring forth from the earth and sky is beyond what you can comprehend.

Dark clouds often blow through your life. If you turn and run away to hide, you will miss the power that can be found inside of you.

Remember that even the darkest parts of you have brilliant and powerful light within. You can’t have one without the other. Accept your dark shadows and be open to the power of your inner light.

Introduce Your Love to Others

My husband sent this to me in an email the other day and it really resonated with me; therefore I am sharing it with all of you.

Welcome to my love
You might think to welcome you is a little silly, but is it?
If my love renews for you each and every day
Shouldn't I introduce you to it each and every day?

Qi Gong an Exercise for Your Energy

Qi Gong literally means energy exercise in English but many people don't understand how it works with your body's energy.

Energy is not something mysterious. We experience it every day. When we wake up in the morning we either feel energetic or tired. As we continue throughout our day we also experience either states of elevated energy or depleted energy. Judging from the commercials on TV it seems many people experience low-energy in the afternoon.

Qi Gong can help you feel more energetic and less tired. Practicing in the afternoon can give your body the natural energy boost that it needs. While long-term practice of can enhance your body's overall system giving you extra energy and helping you feel more vibrant throughout the day. But how does this work?

The first way that Qi Gong helps your body's energy is that it keeps it flowing freely throughout all your vital systems. The movements of the exercises help to lead and guide the energy. Specific exercise sets have different goals but in general exercises for improving and maintaining good overall health lead and guide the energy throughout the entire body. In addition to circulating the energy throughout the entire system the movements also help to remove stagnation. So by practicing, you remove any stagnation that exists, keep the energy flowing freely, and make sure it reaches every part of the body. This is essential for maintaining the health and becoming healthier because it is this circulation that provides the nourishment that the body needs to function properly and repair itself.

Secondly, if your body is able to more efficiently circulate and use energy then you will experience an increase in your perceived energy level. When energy is flowing freely without stagnation to the entire body, your body is better able to repair itself from the normal wear and tear it experiences everyday. This means that by practicing Qi Gong your body will get healthier overtime.

These are just some general ways that Qi Gong affects your body's energy. By practicing you can enhance the way your body stores, circulates, and utilizes energy. The results you see from practicing Qi Gong can show themselves in many different ways. The best way is to practice and start experiencing the results for yourself.

Old Friends

Last year, 2010, was a strange year for me as my and my husband’s life changed in a lot of ways.  Not only did some things fall away from my husband and I, but some people that we had been close with our entire lives fell away from us too.  Before, these things would have cut much more deeply, but he and I have experienced even deeper spiritual growth over the past year.  When I think of those things and people I remember them kindly sending them light and loving energy – then I let the memory be just that - a memory.  All of our past experiences have been there to teach us something.  Sometimes we have to keep experiencing something over and over until we finally get the lesson.  Once that happens we are able to move forward, which means those teachers will be left in the past.  Those teachers may not understand why they are being left in the past so please have compassion, but don’t be afraid to move forward either.  It is a matter of releasing those things or people in our lives that weight us down and opening to those things and people who lift us up and soar with us.
As I said it was a strange year.  Not only did some people fall away, but over a period of six months I reconnected with some of the closest friends I have ever had in my life.  I had lost contact with them and did not even know where they were located as they are spread across the United States.  The love I have for these dear friends runs very deep.  It is so beautiful to be able to find those people who are truly special to us.
Is there someone missing in your life?  Have you lost contact with him/her?  Maybe today is the day that you start looking.

Love Each Other...Love Nature

Notice the man in the background too!  He is hugging the tree.

Have you ever hugged someone?  Most likely everyone has.  Have you ever hugged a tree?  Seriously!  If you have not, keep your eyes open for a tree that calls to you.  If you really open yourself and pay attention, you will feel it and you won’t think I am crazy asking you to hug a tree.  When you open your heart and your soul to nature and Earth’s energy, you very well may be utterly surprised at the feelings you will encounter.
If everyone would give more love all around, the world would experience beautiful spiritual growth.

Take the Time

Take time out to spend with your children, your siblings, your parents, your pet, your partner.  When you spend time with these people how much of your attention is actually focused on them?  Are you sidetracked by thoughts of work, the television in the background, dinner cooking on the stove?  It truly is important to spend time with the special people in your life, but make sure that you are paying attention to them when you are with them.  Really listen to what they have to say.  Look them in the eyes.  When you are distracted you may only respond to their stories with, “Uh, huh.  Yep.  That’s nice, dear.”  That is not good for them or for you.  Having a strong bond with the special people in your life adds light and joy to your life and their lives.  Though few realize it this is a good way to connect to your spirituality – a Divine love.

Negativity Builds Up

It is important that you don’t let your stresses and difficulties build up in your body. Shoving your feelings down – repressing them – only adds more stress to your body. Worrying and fretting over things brings negative energy into your body. Your cells absorb all of this negativity and the next thing you know you will be ill. Blockages are created and energy can no longer flow smoothly through your body. One common area in the body where you may notice this is your shoulders. Are they tense? Do you feel tension in them? Another common occurrence is that you get a cold.

When you feel stress or tension close your eyes, breathe deeply and focus on warmth around your heart. Focus on a beautiful white light shining inside of you. It may work better for you to focus that light and positive healing energy on the particular area that you feel stress such as your shoulders. Try this different ways and see what works best for you. If you have never done this before, it may take you a few attempts to feel as though you are accomplishing it. Remember there is not right or wrong way – just whatever helps you release some of your tension and at least sense your inner peace.

Yoga Meets Dance

I recently took a Yoga Meets Dance class!  It was a lot of fun and certainly gave me the opportunity to connect to spirit.  You do not have to be a dancer to do this type of class.  In fact, it doesn't matter if you have never had so much as one dance class.  It is a wonderful experience.

Visit the Yoga Meets Dance website for more info.

Spiritual Laughter

One of our teenage sons :)
Laughter Yoga is becoming increasingly popular.  It is fun and makes you feel wonderful.  Think about a time when you laughed so hard your stomach hurt or a time you just couldn't stop laughing.  Maybe you have just been sitting somewhere and all of a sudden you start to smile as you remember something funny and then burst out laughing.
Has anything ever happened where you can't help but laugh?  Where does that come from?  Is it your spirit reaching out to you to tell you to lighten up?  Is it God or the Divine wrapping warmth and love around you?
There have been studies done that show laughter is valuable to our health and mental status.  Laughing to me, however, is much more than a yoga exercise, health benefit or something we just do occasionally.  Laughter is a special place where pure light shines through.  It is where joy overtakes all that is dark and where laughter flows out of you like an erupting volcano.  Laughter is music to the ears and demands attention from those that hear it.  Laughter can be a tipping point where it makes someone else laugh just because he/she heard you laugh.  In fact, when practicing Laughter Yoga participants may start out having to create laughter, but soon they experience true heartfelt, soul-deep laughter.  Laughter is contagious and spontaneous.  Though we cannot touch laughter it can touch us deeply.  Don't hold back your laughter – share it with the world.

Breathe

The stress of project deadlines at work, bills arriving in your inbox, dirty laundry waiting to be washed, the dog begging to go out, the oil needing to be changed in the car, and the neighbor practicing his drums at odd hours can cause the flow of energy in your body to encounter blockages.  Shoulder muscles may tense up and you forget to breathe – no, I mean really and truly breathe.

When this happens a lot more than just a stiff neck or aching shoulders occurs.  Without a good flow of energy through your entire body suffers as well as your spirit.  One easy and wonderful way to relax and open yourself back up to the flow of energy is to take five minutes (quiet minutes), lay flat on the floor on your back, lay your arms out to your sides with palms up, and take slow deep breaths.  Do this regularly and you are likely to discover a wonderful transformation within yourself.

Dream Yoga

Dream Yoga is a form of lucid dreaming. What is lucid dreaming you ask? Well, simply put lucid dreaming is when you are aware you are dreaming. Some people have learned how to gain some control within their lucid dreams – some request to fly or speak with a particular person or change the dream in some way. Most people recognize there are dreaming when something odd occurs. One of my lucid dreams involved having to climb over a fence, but above the fence was a giant - though beautiful - spider web. There were actually three or four of these in a row. After I climbed over the first one I looked back and realized the spider web was still intact. I knew that could not be possible. Suddenly I realized I was dreaming. I tried to take control of the dream or guide its direction. I do not claim to be very good at that. I more often just try to make note that I realize I am dreaming, accept it, and pay attention.

It is said that Tibetan Buddhists developed dream yoga around 1000 years ago. The intent was to not only become aware during one’s dreams, but to accomplish specific tasks. Dream yoga is supposed to be another method to find answers, connect with the Divine, travel to different places, and more. Another Silent Snow

Silent Snow

Oh beautiful white drifting silently from the sky
I hear the thundering in my ears
I heard the roar against the silence
Ice crystals upon my cheeks
Softly caressing, head to my feet

Oh the bitter cold surrounding my bundled soul
I see many souls adrift upon the breeze
I heard the crunch, feet in the snow
No sounds came from beyond
Only silent blessings, God to my heart

Oh the warmth of my soul wrapped in your love
I feel the pain within my edges
I feel the warmth of life-giving blood
Breath filling me from below and above
Silently I breathe, Earth to my soul

Time to Stretch

Have you sat at your computer too long?  Okay, well take a break.  Stand up.  Stretch.  Take a deep breath.  Bend over and let your arms hang to the floor.  Then slowly roll back up.  Now take another deep breath.

I hope you have felt some tension release.  This is a good and easy way to relieve stress and reconnect with you - even if only briefly.  Your body and your spirit will thank you!

What Defines Spiritual Practice?

When we think of spiritual practice we may think of an image of a Buddha, or someone sitting on cushions as they meditate, or someone in a yoga posture. However, each persons practice is as unique as the individual. Our spiritual practice may or may not include sitting meditation. Perhaps we meditate while: walking, enjoying nature, meandering through a fine art museum, cooking, cleaning, going on retreats, having quiet times at home, skiing or kayaking. Whatever we do during the day, whether we are working or parenting, there are many ways to practice ethics and kindness. At the office, we can attend to tasks mindfully and listen to colleagues and co-workers attentively. Taking a moment each hour to close our eyes and focus on our breathing can help us be more mindful and peaceful at work.

We can set our watches to beep each hour, of set a mindfulness chime on our computers. At home, with the children, tuning into their needs, moods, joys and sorrows -- cooking mindfully -- enjoying the process as well as the product -- looking at the colors and textures of foods, tasting herbs and spices, smelling delicious aromas -- all spiritual practice. When we are out and about, we may practice by smiling at people, being kind to store clerks and strangers. Several years ago I lived in a university town where there were many students walking about the campus, especially between classes. I remembered when my two sons attended university and opened my heart to the students in the same way I open my heart to my sons. We can express our spirituality by extending kindness to each person we meet on our daily path. Talking less and listening more -- giving our undivided attention to people is giving a spiritual gift to them. Listening with our hearts as well as our ears will deepen our relationships as well as our spiritual practice. What does your spiritual practice look like?

Most People Dream...

Most people dream, some people chase and realize their dreams. Understanding dreams however is the key. A dream can be defined as experience of voices, events etc in our imagination or in mind. Oneirology is the study of dreams in humans. Human history is riddled with instances where dreams have been studied scientifically or have been a source of inspiration for artists as well. What is lesser known fact is that even animals dream.

What is dream Interpretation?

When meanings are assigned to dreams, this process is called Dream Interpretation. Different systems of dream interpretation have assigned meanings like in terms of future events, in terms of chance events during the night etc.

Many scientific researches have been made on dreams and these modern theories have more or less tried to explain as many facts found in scientific research like:

o The cause of dreams
o The purpose of dreams
o The content of dreams
o The varying frequencies of dreams
o The relationship between dreams and depression
o The possible evolutionary role of dreaming

Definition of dream:

Hall

Calvin S. Hall developed a theory of dreams in1953, in which he said that dreaming is a cognitive process. Dream was simply a thought or sequence of thoughts that occurred during sleep, and that dreams are just visual representations of your personal conceptions. According to his explanation, if you dream of being attacked by your friends, this may be a manifestation of fear of friendship.

Sigmund Freud

Freud first published his book "The interpretation of Dreams" at the end of the 19th century. He had a different concept. He said that the foundation of all dream content is the fulfillment of wishes, conscious or not and the schism between ego and id leads to censorship of dreams. He said that only an understanding of the structure of the dream-work can explain the dream.

Freud listed four transformations applied wishes in order to avoid censorship:

o Condensation - one dream object stands for several thoughts
o Displacement - a dream object's psychical importance is assigned to an indifferent dream object
o Representation - a thought is translated to visual images
o Symbolism - a symbol replaces an action, person, or idea

According to him these transformations help to disguise the latent content. Nightmares represented a clash between the ego and the id: the id wishes to see a past wish fulfilled, while the ego cannot allow it; he interprets the anxiety of a nightmare as the ego working against the id. Freud did a lot of research -self analysis and psychoanalysis on his patients before arriving to this conclusion.

Scientific American-theory:

Later many people also did a lot of research on dreams .A theory was put forth in 2003 on the Scientific American, according to which dreams provide sensory stimulation to the brain when the eyes, ears, etc. are still developing. Tests showed that REM-deprived cats developed visual problems. Analysis showed that there is a direct correlation between immaturity of an animal at birth and its required REM sleep like for example, the platypus, which is born without eyes cling to its mother for weeks and they need the most REM of all mammals; where as the dolphin, which at birth is a self-sufficient swimmer, gets almost none.
It also suggested that since humans wake more quickly from REM than normal sleep, dreams could have evolved to keep us alert for predators in the night. According to this theory nightmares could be a specialized form of this; a human makes a sudden, reflexive movement when he is woken up from a nightmare, which can collide with a beast that would otherwise have killed him.

Oneiromancy:

Dreams are also considered as a prediction of the future-oneiromancy or messages from the past and so people tend to interpret their dreams according to what they believe could happen or the object they see could mean of something. They look for signs to get their interpretations right.

Special Days

Today happens to be my brother’s birthday.  We often remember others on special days.  It is a great opportunity to honor them.  It can make it easier to honor those we don’t know as well too.
Do you ever find it awkward to accept praise or compliments from others?  If so, it may be because far too many of us get busy and forget to compliment those we encounter.  If you tell a co-worker she looks really pretty today or he looks very handsome, she/he may be surprised.  Of course, in the United States, unfortunately, we have experienced too much sexual harassment in the workplace and must be careful what we say.
Either we don’t think about the positive attributes of those around us or we censor what we say because we fear the other person will find us strange.  But, I encourage you to try to appropriately compliment others – your family, the cashier at the grocery, the nurse at the doctor’s office, your child’s teacher.  Let me challenge you a bit more though – how about the guy who zips in front of you and takes the parking space or the lady who cuts in line in front of you or the rude waiter who serves your dinner cold.  If you can’t find a pleasant thing to say, then offer a brilliant and warm smile.
Find a way to make every day a special day for at least one other person.  It will make your day special too!

Why Pay Attention to Dreams

There are many different perspectives on dreams.  Where they come from, what they mean, why you dream. Freud believed they are an opportunity for you to fulfill wishes that you cannot fulfill in your daily living.  Jung believed they are an opportunity for you to find psychological balance.  I think it is important to realize that there are different types of dreams.  There are dreams that seem to offer answers.  There are weird fragmented dreams.  There are lucid dreams.  There are prophetic dreams.  Some dreams may come up time and again for you.
Do dreams come from residue from your day?  Do they come from the collective unconscious?  Do they come from God?  Or are they your spirit and soul trying to work out some things?  No one has the absolute answer.  Maybe dreams are created from a variety of these possibilities.
Is every dream a message?  While many think so, I tend to feel that you can discover much for your dreams, but I am not sure each and every dream has a true message.  I think sometimes our spirit knows better than we do what needs to be worked out and maybe that is where those dreams that we will never figure out come from.
So, why pay attention to your dreams?  Well, if you jot down notes about your dream, come back to it later, work through it creatively (such as writing a poem, writing a story, painting it, drawing images, etc), talk about it, and so on, you may very likely find a message.  You may begin to see repetitive patterns in your dreams.  You may be better able to release a bad dream.  You may realize you knew something before it happened.  And, if you can learn to lucid dream (knowing you are dreaming while you are dreaming), you may be able to guide your dreams in the direction you want.
Just remember that truly – you are the only one who can interpret your dreams!
Ah, okay – another plug for our Dream Journal – It is a great tool to have at your fingertips when you wake from a dream.  It offers a place to make notes about your dreams as well as room to ponder them later.

It's Okay

Sometimes you work and work on something.  When you finally think you are almost finished you realize that the end result is not what you expected.  You may feel frustration.  You may feel like throwing in the towel.  In fact, I just heard my husband at his desk, “Errrrr!”  He has been working all day on our podcast and, well…sometimes you just can’t expect perfection.  You just have to do the best you have to work with and go from there.
Just know that it is okay to take a step back and walk away.  It is okay to take a break.  And, it is okay not to be perfect!  If your expectations are too high, you may create more stress than it is worth.  Open your arms and know that there is Divine love for you, and you don’t need to be perfect to receive it.

SING!

A couple of weeks back I was at my son's high school band concert.  As the choirs changed from one to the other the choir director turned the audience and said, "Raise your hand if you used to sing in a choir."  Then she asked, "How many of you still sing with a group?"  Only one or two out of the numerous, who had originally raised their hands, were still singing in a choir or group.  The choir director urged those not still singing to find a group to sing with.  She wanted to know why they had given up something the enjoyed.

Did you sing in the choir?  Are you singing now?  Why not?

Did you play an instrument?  Are you still playing?  Why not?

The things that bring us joy fill us with love, light, and energy!

Who are You?

AAAAA!  Uh oh, someone somewhere just looked in the mirror and wondered who in the hell he/she is!  Have you ever done that?  Honestly, even the best of us will most likely go through that at least once in this life.  Well, let me ask you a few quick questions.

·         As a child or youth, did you have a dream?
·         What did you play with or do most often as a child?
·         Did you abandon that dream?
·         Have you stopped doing something you loved?
·         Are you happy?  NO!  I mean really are you happy?  At work? At home? In your relationship? With your health?
Reconnecting with your true self, your spirituality and the Divine energy can change your life.  Are you ready?

Happy New Year!

Today is the start of a whole new year.  For many this is a time to make change.  Don’t be afraid to do just that!  You have a new calendar to start fresh with.  Mark off the days or check-mark them every evening before you go to bed.  This can be a chance for you to say, “I did it again today! YES!”
